Drone Photography and Videography in London: Capturing the Impact of Summer Heatwaves Across The Royal Parks

Seeing the effects of climate change from above

Recently, Clark Creative was commissioned by The Royal Parks to capture photography and video across their London parks and green spaces, documenting the visible effects of summer heatwaves and the resulting impact on the natural landscape.

Using a combination of drone photography, aerial video and ground-level imagery, the aim was to create a compelling visual record that The Royal Parks could use across its website and social media channels to educate the public about the ongoing impact of climate change.

For this project, aerial imagery offered a particularly valuable perspective. From above, changes across lawns, grassland and wider parkland become easier to see, helping communicate the scale of the impact in a way that individual ground-level photographs cannot always achieve.

As a Bournemouth-based drone photographer and videographer working on projects across London and the UK, this was an opportunity to use visual storytelling to support an important environmental message.

Drone photography across London’s Royal Parks

The project took was across 10 locations looked after by The Royal Parks;

  • Brompton Cemetery

  • Bushy Park

  • The Green Park

  • Greenwich Park

  • Hyde Park

  • Kensington Gardens

  • Primrose Hill

  • Richmond Park

  • St James's Park

  • The Regent's Park

From the expansive grasslands of Richmond Park and Bushy Park to the more formal landscapes of central London's historic parks, each location presented a different visual story.

The objective was to capture how the summer heat had affected the appearance of these environments, particularly the changes in colour across the grass and vegetation.

Drone photography made it possible to capture wider views of the landscape, revealing patterns and contrasts that might be less obvious from the ground. These aerial perspectives could then be combined with video footage and closer details to build a more complete picture of the conditions across the parks.

Using drone video to tell the story of climate change

Photography can freeze a moment, but video allows an audience to explore a landscape and appreciate its scale.

For The Royal Parks, drone videography provided another way to communicate the visible effects of the summer heatwaves. Sweeping aerial movements and wider landscape views can help viewers understand how the parks fit together and how conditions vary across different areas.

Combined with still photography, this footage helped to create a bank of visual assets that can be used to support educational content, website articles and social media campaigns.

The purpose was not simply to create attractive aerial footage of London's parks. It was to capture imagery that served a specific communication objective: helping people see the changes taking place in familiar environments and encouraging them to think about the wider effects of climate change.

Why aerial imagery is valuable for environmental storytelling

Drone photography is often associated with property, construction, tourism and promotional films, but it can also play an important role in education, conservation and environmental communications.

Aerial imagery is one part of the wider storytelling process. Used alongside ground-level photography, video and great storytelling it can help organisations communicate environmental issues in a way that is both visually engaging and easy to understand.

Aerial photography and video for organisations across London and the UK

Projects such as this demonstrate how drone photography and videography can support much more than conventional promotional content.

Whether an organisation needs to document a landscape, communicate a change in the environment, showcase a development or create a film for a marketing campaign, aerial imagery can provide a distinctive perspective.

At Clark Creative, we provide photography, videography and drone services for businesses, brands and organisations. Based in Bournemouth, Dorset, we work across London and throughout the UK, tailoring our approach to the purpose of each project.

Our work can include aerial photography, drone video, wider commercial photography and video production, with the aim of creating content that is visually compelling and useful beyond the day of filming.

The Royal Parks project is a great example of how these services can come together to communicate a meaningful story, using imagery to help people better understand the world around them.

What are the benefits of drone photography for environmental projects?

Drone photography can capture a wider view of landscapes, helping communicate patterns, changes and differences that may be difficult to appreciate at ground level. For environmental education, aerial imagery can complement ground photography, video and explanatory information to help audiences understand a subject more clearly.

Can drone photography and video be used for educational campaigns?

Yes. Aerial photography and video can provide engaging visual material for educational websites, social media campaigns, presentations and public information projects. The approach should be tailored to the subject, the audience and the message the organisation wants to communicate.

Can you provide both drone photography and videography on the same project?

Yes. Combining still photography and video can provide a more versatile collection of content. Photography can be used for articles, reports and campaign materials, while video can communicate movement, scale and atmosphere. The balance between the two can be planned around the project's objectives.

Can you fly drones in London's Royal Parks?

Drone flights in parks and other public spaces require careful planning and the appropriate permissions. The Royal Parks have specific restrictions on drone use, so any proposed flight must be agreed with the relevant authority and comply with applicable aviation rules. Permission should never be assumed simply because a location is publicly accessible.
